Teaching the Everyday Golfer – Andrew Rice

Golf Digest Top 50 Teacher, Andrew Rice, explores his experiences and advice for coaches working with everyday players of all abilities, including looking at common faults and provide practical help for coaches to improve them, and general principles that all golfers work towards in their coaching sessions...

Andrew Rice has spent over 25 years coaching golfers of all abilities, and the majority of that work has been with everyday club players – not tour professionals. In this Masterclass he sets aside the technical side of the swing entirely and focuses on something rarely covered in coach education: how to structure and deliver a lesson that actually works. Across nine clear principles, Andrew shares what he has learned about giving students what they came for, communicating with clarity, managing expectations honestly, and treating every golfer as an individual. It is a session about the craft of coaching – and about building the kind of business that grows because students leave happy and tell other people.

💡 What You’ll Learn

  • Why your job is to solve the student’s problem, not your own – and how to avoid imposing your agenda on the lesson
  • How to be clear and concise early in a session: diagnosing the problem, setting an objective, and committing to it
  • Why every student needs to leave with a drill and a practice plan – and how to build one that takes them from where they are to where they want to be
  • How to manage expectations from the start so students stay motivated rather than frustrated
  • Why the objective should never change even when your approach to reaching it does – and how to explain that to the student
  • The importance of sharing lesson content in a format the student can refer back to, and how tools like CoachNow make that simple
  • Why personality, warmth, and genuine follow-up are just as important to a coaching business as technical knowledge
  • How to think of yourself as a business person – and why building your audience is the foundation everything else depends on
