Wiebe Giesen has spent his career putting children at the centre of golf development – not as future members or future competitors, but as people who deserve a well-designed, enjoyable introduction to the game. In this closing session of the Junior Coaching series, he brings his experience as a practitioner, PGA educator and contributor to Dutch national youth policy to bear on the questions every club professional faces: how do you structure a junior programme that actually works, how do you keep young players engaged over time, and what does it take to make the transition from a first introduction to a lasting habit of play?
💡 What You’ll Learn
- How to structure a junior programme using a clear framework of technique, skills and mindset
- Why the first experience a child has of golf determines whether they return – and what that means for how you design introductory sessions
- How to work within a national youth policy framework (such as the NGF 9-step plan) and adapt it to your club context
- The role of fun and social connection in keeping juniors engaged across different age groups
- How group coaching formats can be used effectively to build a sustainable junior programme at club level
- Practical lessons from large-scale junior outreach work, including sessions for children with disabilities
- How to think about the coach’s responsibility not just to golf development but to the young person’s broader growth

🎤 About the Speaker
Wiebe Giesen has been a PGA Holland professional since 2011 and holds an A-level qualification (KSS Level 4), the highest teaching grade in the Dutch system. He is head professional at Golfclub De Hoge Kleij in Leusden, where he leads a golf school built around a three-pillar model of technique, skills and mindset. He came to golf through a background in physical education and sports science (CIOS and the Academy of Physical Education), and his initial ambition was straightforward: to introduce 100,000 children to golf. Through recreational sports projects and the Court Golf Challenge, run in partnership with the Johan Cruyff Foundation, he has already introduced at least 5,000 children and young people with disabilities to the game. Alongside his club role, he is a tutor on the PGA Holland education programme and works with the NGF (Netherlands Golf Federation) on national youth policy. His additional qualifications include Titleist Performance Institute Level 1, youth coaching CPD, and PGA Holland Mental Coach Level 1.
