Junior participation is falling. In Holland, Jimmy van Heuven van Staereling has watched junior membership drop from around ten percent to below two and a half percent of total golfers. In Part 1 of this three-part series, he sets out eight fundamentals he believes every PGA Professional can use to build a junior programme that actually works – one grounded in evidence and decades of practice, not theory. This session is about the why and the what before Part 2 and Part 3 go deeper into game coaching and motor learning.
💡 What You’ll Learn
- The eight fundamentals of a good junior programme: fun, teams, training, playing on course, instruction, structured plan, environment and leadership
- Why fun must have meaning and purpose rather than being an end in itself – and how PGA Professionals are best placed to create that distinction
- How to build and use teams within your junior programme, and why golf should be promoted as both an individual and a team sport
- Why at least 50 percent of junior training time should be spent playing on the course, not on the driving range
- How juniors learn differently from adults – and why goal-centred, implicit learning is more effective than direct technical instruction
- How biological and chronological age differences should shape how you group and monitor junior players over time
- Why a structured, documented annual plan protects the junior programme when a professional moves on – and how to use it to attract volunteers and sponsors
- How to create the right environment around juniors – including educating parents, working with club members and building support from the whole club
